What to Expect

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapy, originally developed in China over several thousand years, in which fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body.
The choice of where to put the needles is determined by the style of acupuncture that is practised. In Britain, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Medical Acupuncture and Five Element Acupuncture are commonly practised. At this clinic we use TCM Acupuncture. This is the form of traditional medicine commonplace in modern day China and has developed over 5000 years. TCM represents about 8% of all the medicine used in the world today.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is generally very safe. Serious side effects of acupuncture are very rare; another reason why acupuncture treatment is so appropriate for pregnant women and babies.
Additionally, only single use, sterile disposable needles are used in the clinic. The needles are also extremely fine (0.2 mm wide!) and so most people experience minimal discomfort.

What to Expect in an Appointment

There’s no need to be nervous ... most importantly, most people find acupuncture very relaxing! In fact it is usual for clients to look forward to the peace that an appointment offers and, of course, the benefit of the treatment itself.

The first appointment involves an interview followed by your treatment. I will ask you all the questions that are relevant to your circumstances, and will be thorough when it comes to medical issues, lifestyle, diet and other information that relates to your health.
I will feel your pulses at the wrist and look at your tongue to aid my diagnosis. I will then discuss your treatment options, particularly focusing on the acupuncture, diet and other lifestyle issues. When you come to see me for the first time, please bring any medical record that may be relevant. Please also bring the contact details of your midwife and your GP.
The acupuncture treatment follows the interview. The needles are inserted and then left for 20 minutes. This is time to unwind, you.  may day dream or even fall asleep.

Your first appointment, combining the conversation and the treatment, will mean you spend up to one hour with me. Follow up appointments typically take around 40 minutes. Each treatment session is currently priced at £40.

Please wear loose clothing for treatment. It helps if I can easily access your arms and legs. It is uncommon that clients will have to remove clothing. When this is necessary we protect your privacy with the use of screens and towels.

Please eat and drink something on the day of your treatment. Acupuncture can cause faintness and nausea when a client has eaten nothing that day.

I look forward to seeing you!
